Twitter has added a location feature, allowing users to tag tweets with specific places.
“Starting today, you can tag tweets with specific places, including all World Cup stadiums in South Africa, and create new Twitter Places,” says the company on its blog.
“You can also click a Twitter Place within a Tweet to see recent Tweets from a particular location. Try it out during the next match —you will be able to see tweets coming from the stadium.”
Users can tag tweets with an existing place from the database, or add their own. They can click on a place within a tweet and see what others have said from that location.
Also new is Foursquare and Gowalla integration. This means that when users click on a Twitter Place, they’ll see check-ins from Foursquare and Gowalla as well as standard tweets.
There’s a new API that lets developers integrate Twitter Places into their applications, and support for more browsers, so that location can be added to tweets from any browser – Safari, Internet Explorer, Chrome or Firefox.
“Over the next week, we will roll this out to users in 65 countries around the world, so keep an eye out for the ‘Add your location’ link below the tweet box,” says Twitter.
“We are also working to bring Twitter Places to our other mobile applications, including Twitter for iPhone, Android, and Blackberry.”
