Remember when the president of the United States carried around a stylish suitcase with a button that, if pressed, could have ended the world as we knew it?
Well, now we have an official Twitter button and just about anybody can press it.
Although some allegedly wise pundits refer to this development as “progress,” I would respectfully disagree.
Why, you ask?
Because the Internet is about to get a whole lot noisier with this so-called “Tweet” button.
That’s right, Twitter designed their virtual button to “make sharing simple” by allowing users to disseminate links directly from their favorite web sites.
“[So], when you click on the Tweet Button, a Tweet box will appear – pre-populated with a shortened link that points to the item that you’re sharing,” tweeted Twitterati spokesperson Carolyn Penner.
“After you post to Twitter, you may see suggestions for accounts to follow. These accounts are suggested by the web site you visited and may include, for example, the news outlet and reporter of the article you shared.”
As expected, Penner acknowledged that similar content sharing buttons already exist on on other sites, but emphasized those (such as TweetMe) were created by third parties.
“[And our] Tweet Button is not only simple for users, but for publishers of all sizes, too. Recreational bloggers to large media companies can quickly and easily add the Tweet Button to their sites.
“It only takes a few lines of code. [And] the Tweet Button will help publishers grow traffic and increase their Twitter following.”
So, press that button and Tweet on! You know you want to!
