MySpace gets ‘Mashup’ with Facebook

MySpace has, as long expected, signed a deal allowing its users to log in using Facebook.

Building on the Sync with Facebook feature launched in August, Mashup with Facebook allows users of both social networks to import their Facebook likes and interests to a Myspace stream with one click.

Users can also program their own streams based on recommendations and current MySpace trending topics.

“The stream is one of our most popular features on Myspace, and it is now delivering an even richer entertainment experience of relevant content for our users to enjoy,” said Mike Jones, Myspace CEO.

“I’m particularly excited because so many people will be able to have the immediate satisfaction of enjoying their own entertainment program that they have customized themselves as well as connecting to all their passions and to the Myspace community at large.”

Users can visit and click on the Mashup with Facebook button to begin and create a basic Myspace profile. They can then immediately begin building their personal profile based on information listed in their Facebook profile.

Facebook likes and interests are automatically matched to relevant Myspace topic pages, profiles, video programming and other content. Tailored recommendations of new topic pages and profiles are delivered in real-time, and subscriptions are available to a range of entertainment programming.

Mashup with Facebook is available worldwide now. The company is promising to implement the Facebook Like button across the site ‘soon’, making it easier to share entertainment interests with Facebook friends.

The deal is receiving a mixed reception. Many observers regard it as too little, too late – or, worse, a total capitulation on MySpace’s part to an overwhelmingly dominant Facebook.

But not everybody sees it that way.

“Myspace has again become a talkable brand based on the buzz I’m witnessing today on Twitter,” says Forrester analyst Augie Ray. 

“Myspace will live or die on how quickly new and old users alike will see the value of personalize entertainment content; the Facebook integration allows users to bypass the onerous task of defining their preferences and favorites.  The quicker people can experience their own version of Myspace, the better the chances they’ll stick around and return.”
