Murdoch’s iPad newspaper gets delayed

Media mogul Rupert Murdoch has launched a few successful publications in his time, but we’re going to have to wait a bit longer to see if The Daily is one of them. The pending iPad-exclusive newspaper won’t be coming out as soon as expected.

Murdoch was supposed to appear with Steve Jobs and other Apple executives at a media event next Wednesday to announce to launch of Daily, but that event has been canceled, according to All Things Digital, a website owned by Murdoch’s The Wall Street Journal.

Though no one from News Corp or Apple is commenting on it, it is expected the delay could be several weeks.

Also unclear is on whose end the delay falls. News Corp has already hired a team of staff writers but has to set up the layout of the digital newspaper to be perfect. Meanwhile, Apple doesn’t have a perfect system in place yet for subscription purchases over iTunes. Other online magazines or newspapers charge users directly, but Apple is reportedly working on a system where it handles the subscription fees.

The Daily’s launch is hotly anticipated because it could mark the beginning of a new chapter in media. Sure, other online publications exist, but none has the clout of coming from a behemoth like News Corp. Meanwhile, other big publishers make their print media available on the iPad and other devices, but still have a print business as well. News Corp’s new initiative is the first of its kind.

Unfortunately, though, it looks like we’ll have to wait a bit longer for that chapter to begin.
