Microsoft details WP7 "Mango" specs

Microsoft is previewing the next version of its Windows Phone 7 operating system at TechEd 2011 in Atlanta.

Codenamed “Mango,” the latest iteration of Redmond’s mobile OS is slated for release later this year and will boast a number of productivity enhancements.

For example, Mango offers users the ability to easily save and share documents via the cloud-based Office 365 and Windows Live SkyDrive.

Other notable features include improved Twitter integration, Facebook/AOL chat, pinnable email folders, conversation view in email, Exchange server searches, a Lync Mobile app, complex (alpha-numeric) password support and Information Rights Management (IRM) capabilities to protect e-mails as well as Office docs.

Meanwhile, Microsoft exec Paul Bryan confirmed the Windows Phone Marketplace remains on track to exceed a respectable 16,000 apps sometime this week.

“With new capabilities for developers in Mango – such as HTML5 support and the targeted distribution of apps – we expect an even larger number and wider range of apps for Windows Phone in the future,” he added.
