It’s the most wonderful time of the year. No, we’re not talking about Christmas. We’re talking about an ingenious idea to rid the world of unnecessary Facebook friends.
That’s right. It’s National Unfriend Day today, as proposed and accepted by late night talk show host Jimmy Kimmel. Kimmel came up with the idea earlier this month, saying it’s time for everyone to take a close look at their list of hundreds of friends and see how many of these people are actually real-life friends.
So if you’re one of those people who friends everyone with the same last name as you, goes through your old school yearbooks and goes through every name in there, and friend request all of your friend’s friends whether you know them or not, this day is for you.
Facebook hasn’t officially commented on the national “holiday” that has arisen because of this trend of friend creep. However, if you have hundreds of Facebook friends, expect to have a little less by the end of the day.
I personally have limited myself to 200 friends. Every time I need to add a new, real friend I go in and delete someone. But, even with that discipline, 200 is a very big number, and there are certainly a whole bunch of old high school classmates there who, in real life, I never spent more than 10 minutes with. This is something we all must realize and accept.
It’s not intended to be a mean-spirited day, but rather a wake-up call for everyone to see just how ridiculous their expanding Facebook friend list is.
Seriously, if you haven’t communicated with someone for more than a year, then they really don’t have any reason to be your Facebook friend. Unless they’ve been in a coma or something.
