Google lets you customize your Gmail experience

The search giant has just revealed a new way to personalize your gigantic e-mail inbox.

It was not that long ago that Google first introduced a variety of themes to shake up the way your Gmail page looked, giving users some customization over the site’s appearance. But the number of available themes is pretty limited.

Now, you’re able to use any picture you want as the background image in your Gmail inbox. “Themes in Gmail are great—there are tons to choose from and they give your inbox a personalized look. But we’ve heard from many of you who thought it would be even better if you could give Gmail an even more personalized look and create themes completely on your own,” Google explained in a blog post.

Effective immediately, there’s a new link in the Gmail “Option” menu. Under “Mail Settings,” click on “Create your own theme” and you will be able to upload pictures to your heart’s content. Now you can see your pet dog, children, house, or whatever else you want every time you check your Gmail account.

Google of course also lets users create a customized version of its home search page. You can choose to upload a picture and use it as the background of your own Google.com site.

It’s all about personalization, and Google is finally opening that up to its e-mail service in a big way.
