Google has released a new application that lets Android users search their phone by scrawling on the screen with a finger.
Gesture Search allows users to search contacts, bookmarks, applications and music. It currently requires Android 2.0 or above, found at the moment only on the Nexus One and Verizon Droid.
The comany says it’s ideal for people who find typing or speaking just too much hassle.
“Say you want to call your friend Anne. Just open Gesture Search and draw letter ‘A’, and Gesture Search returns a list of items that have words starting with ‘A’,” says Google research scientist Yang Li.
“If your handwriting isn’t all that neat, that’s okay. If the ‘A’ you draw looks a bit like an ‘H’… ‘H’ results will be brought up as well.”
Users can delete a query by crossing it out.
Gesture Search learns from the user’s search history, so that frequently-searched items jump to the top of the list.
