In a bid to cut costs and eliminate duplication, Yahoo said it will shut down the once highly popular GeoCities.
A note on the GeoCities web site said: “Sorry, new GeoCities accounts are no longer available. After careful consideration, we have decided to close GeoCities later this year. We’ll share more details this summer.” An advert to the right of the notice offered people the opportunity to save 50% on a web site using Yahoo! web hosting.
Earlier this week Yahoo said it would lay off around 700 workers as part of a cost cutting exercise pioneered by Carol Bartz, the CEO of Yahoo.
GeoCities was an early attempt to allow Internet users to create web pages and forge commmunities. But those early attempts never reached the sophistication of Facebook or Myspace.
