If you are a retro-gaming enthusiast, you probably are quite familiar with various emulators, such as the aptly named PPSSPP, which runs PSP titles on Android and a number of other platforms.
However, if you’re looking for an Android game emulator that lets you play retro titles from consoles other than the PS, RetroArch is definitely worth a look.
To be sure, the software is coded to play games from the PlayStation, NES, Sega Genesis, and other old-school game consoles. In total, the emulator software supports over a dozen game emulators. It should be noted that RetroArch was previously available for Windows, Mac, Linux, and other platforms before landing on Google’s expansive Play store for Android devices.
As expected, the software supports plug-and-play detection of both USB and Bluetooth game pads. If you don’t have a game pad available, the emulator software also offers customizable on-screen controls.
An official list of supported emulated devices? PlayStation 1, Nintendo Entertainment System, Super Nintendo, Game Boy, Game Boy Advance, Neo Geo Pocket Color, Sega Genesis, Sega Master System and the WonderSwan Color. Personally, I’ve never heard the device, have you?
And yes, fans of the DOOM franchise will be glad to hear that the emulator supports the game engine from the first and second titles in that franchise. Of course, it’s important to note that this is the emulator software only. Meaning, you will have to source (download) your own ROMs to actually play a game.
