Life goes on, IPO or no IPO, and yesterday Facebook released a new Camera for iOS app that allows users to shoot, filter and share photos.
The company may not yet have closed its $1 billion acquisition of Instagram, but the app looks pretty similar all the same, with 15 different filters to give particular styles.
Users can tag friends and locations, add a description, and then post photos either individually or as a set – something that’s not possible with either Instagram or Facebook’s standard mobile app.
“you can quickly share multiple photos all at once instead of having to post one at a time. Just select the shots you want to share by tapping the check-mark on each photo and then hit post,” says the company’s Dirk Stoop.
“You’ll have a chance to add a caption, say where you were and tag friends before you share.”
Friends’ photos appear in a single feed, and users can tap on them to enlarge and zoom.
For now, Facebook Camera is available for iOS only, and only in English-speaking countries, free from the iPhone App Store. Other languages are promised over the next few weeks, but there’s no word on when it will be extended to other platforms.
It’s also not clear what happens to Instagram. Facebook Camera isn’t based on Instagram technology, and the company is apparently planning to keep the two apps separate.
Facebook needs to improve its mobile presence – it was a recent warning about its mobile revenues that led to the scandal around its IPO last week. Facebook Camera is only the company’s second supplementary mobile app; the first, Messenger, launched last summer.
