Rumor: Sprint to reveal 3D ‘Evo’ phone this week

Sprint has struck gold with its ‘Evo’ brand of 4G smartphones, and it looks like it’s about to throw glasses-free 3D technology into the mix.

One of the biggest mobile trade shows, the CTIA Wireless convention, is set to kick off this week in Orlando, and according to Boy Genius Report, one of the big items it will be showing off is the HTC Evo 3D.

According to the speculation, the device will come equipped with a 3D camera, special apps for watching 3D Blockbuster and Youtube videos, and an HDMI output to playback content on a 3D TV.

This isn’t the first 3D smartphone to make headlines. LG introduced a phone called the Optimus 3D earlier this year. Additionally, Nintendo’s glasses-free 3D system, the 3DS, comes out in the US next week.

The only issue that remains is content. Blockbuster and Youtube have apparently stepped up to the plate, and Nintendo has said Netflix will begin offering streaming 3D movie trailers. LG also noted Gameloft is working on upgrading some of its Android games to run in 3D.

The Evo 3D will reportedly be equipped with Android 2.3, and in addition to the 5 MP rear-facing 3D camera there will also be a 1.3 MP front-facing camera. It’ll be powered by a 1.2 GHz Qualcomm processor.

According to Boy Genius Report, the Evo madness will continue with a 7-inch tablet called the Evo View 4G. As its name suggests, it will be a fully capable 4G tablet, but will unfortunately be powered by Android 2.3 instead of the tablet-optimized 3.0.

The CTIA event officially kicks off tomorrow and runs through March 24. TG Daily will be there bringing you the latest news and hands-on reports.
