A new report claims Amazon is eyeing Hewlett Packard’s defunct webOS for future iterations of its Kindle tablets.
Indeed, the Seattle-based corporation is reportedly engaged in “serious negotiations” to buy the former Palm division from HP.
As VentureBeat’s Devindra Hardawar points out, Amazon would be a “fitting home” for Palm and its webOS software.
“The [recently launched] Kindle Fire is powered by Android, but it’s been heavily customized by Amazon to the point where you can barely tell,” wrote Hardawar.
“By purchasing the remnants of Palm, Amazon would have free rein to redesign webOS to its own liking, and it would be able to further differentiate its Kindle devices from the slew of Android tablets in the market.”
According to Hardawar, webOS still offers plenty of potential to power a successful device, as it boasts advanced multi-tasking capabilities.
This could help future iterations of Kindle Fire tablets juggle games, movies and media with “more finesse” than Android.
It should be noted that smartphone manufacturer Samsung was previously named as another company interested in buying the mobile OS, as was HTC. Both firms were reportedly interested in deploying webOS to differentiate their products from the current lineup of competing Android devices.
