A resident of Northern Texas was rushed to a local hospital after his Droid smartphone allegedly exploded.
According to WFAA, Aron Embry had just finished a call when he heard a loud, ominous pop, which was apparently caused by the Droid’s shattering glass face.
Embry – who began to bleed profusely – required a total of four stitches from doctors at Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas.
“Once I got to the mirror and saw it, it was only then I kind of looked at my phone and realized that the screen had appeared to burst outward,” a shaken Embry told WFAA.
Meanwhile, Motorola issued an official statement promising to thoroughly investigate the incident.
“Motorola’s priority is, and always has been the safety of our customers, and all Motorola products are designed, manufactured and tested to meet or exceed international and local standards for consumer safety.
“We will reach out to the consumer and investigate this thoroughly. [Still], while an exploding phone is rare, it is not unique.”
However, a number of journalists and bloggers, including Phandroid’s Quentyn Kennemer, expressed skepticism over Embry’s allegedly exploding Droid.
“I’ve never heard of a phone just ‘exploding’ (except for the iPhone, but I have my reservations on that, too), and the damage area just doesn’t make sense. The processor, GPU, and battery are nowhere near the apparent point of ‘explosion,’ and even if they were, I’m certain a ‘blast’ would do more damage to the backside of the phone than the face of it,” wrote Kennemer.
“And if any blast did occur, the CPU or GPU would be the most plausible culprits: why is the phone still working? And what are the chances that it would happen as he was talking on the phone? If this story is true, then I feel sorry for him, but I’m just going to take it with a grain of salt for now.”
