Nokia is preparing for a global media event next week, where it will reportedly unveil a number of new smartphones to compete with Android and the iPhone. The first known device will be called the E7.
The E7 should be one of the very first Nokia devices to use the company’s brand new Symbian^3 operating system. Like Apple, Nokia only makes phones using its own proprietary platform and will not use third-party software like Windows Mobile or Android.
Nokia has yet to announce any of the phones that will be on display at next week’s media event. Trying to bring out something that would finally rival the two-way war between Google and Apple would seem to be far from a surprise, though.
According to Techno Buffalo, some details about a phone called the E7 have been uncovered on Nokia’s website, including a full Qwerty keyboard and a 640×360 display. The website also suggests that a touch-screen phone will be in the company’s lineup.
Nokia remains the world’s largest mobile phone manufacturer in the world, thanks mainly to its uncontested dominance in third-world countries and developing parts of the globe. However, the emergence of new smartphone platforms has knocked its place out of other countries like the US. The idea of owning a Nokia handset has been relegated to something of a relic in North America these days.
