Is Netflix’s instant streaming service so ubiquitous now that it deserves a permanent big red button on our remote controls? What do you think?
If you have a TV with Internet connectivity and “apps,” chances are you have a Netflix app. And you might even have a Blu-ray player with the same feature. So instead of going through all those complicated menus to get streaming video on your TV, Netflix wants to simplify things for you.
In a new proposal initiated by the online video subscription company, Netflix buttons may soon be coming to remote controls for Internet-connected living room devices.
“With the Netflix one-click remote, it’s simply a matter of pushing the Netflix button to instantly watch any of the vast selection of TV shows and movies available to stream from Netflix,” said company executive Neil Hunt in a statement.
There are now more than 250 devices with Netflix connectivity, including TVs, set-top boxes, iPhones, and Blu-ray players. Netflix says it has already secured partnerships with many of the manufacturers that make these devices to incorporate a seamless, dedicated button on their remote controls.
From the promotional photo it’s presenting, Netflix wants the button to be the biggest thing on the remote. Heck, it wants to be about 20 times bigger than any of the other buttons. But we’ll see what the manufacturers think about that.
