Thinking of buying a slick new iPhone 4? Well, try not to drop it – or you may end up with a shattered glass panel.
Yes, the aluminosilcate glass front may be “30 times harder than plastic,” but it is still quite vulnerable to an abrupt impact.
Indeed, third-party vendor iFixYouri recently performed several drop tests of an iPhone 4 shell from three-and-a-half feet above the ground.
The front glass panel shattered on the third attempt.
“Sudden impact is what causes 95% of glass shattering. Not because you bent the glass in your pocket, not because you dropped it and it bent, but really because of sudden impact,” claimed iFixYouri.
Unsurprisingly, AppleInsider’s Sam Oliver cautioned that iFixYouri’s “one-off test” should be considered anything but conclusive.
However, Oliver did note that Apple was “veering on the side of caution” by selling its very first set of iPhone protectors known as “bumpers.”
“To be made available in 6 colors for $29.99 a piece, the accessories don’t obscure the front or back of the handset, but instead wrap its edges in a shock-absorbing, rubberized material,” he added.
