Santa Clara (CA) – Intel is about to announce a major deal to supply Nokia with chips for its range of phones.
The chip giant has a conference call set for 0830 PST today (Tuesday) and Bloomberg is predicting that the news will be that Intel has inked a deal with Nokia in its continuing push to get into the mobile market.
Anand Chandrasekher, senior vice president of Intel’s ultra-mobility group is heading the call, but Intel is remaining tight-lipped about its content.
Intel Chief Financial Officer Stacy Smith said earlier this year that the company needed to secure a deal with one of the top five mobile-phone makers.
Intel already has a deal with LG Electronics to supply processors for mobile internet devices as it challenges Texas Instruments for the number one slot in CPUs for mobiles.
Intel’s earlier attempts to break into the mobile market ended in tears around three years ago, but with the Atom now in its portfolio, things could be different this time.
