Sony Vaio AC adapters recalled in shock scare

Sony has issued a safety recall for AC adapters for its Vaio desktops and docking stations. Around 69,000 of the faulty units are believed to be in use.

The recall, in conjunction with the US Consumer Product Safety Commission, is for VGP-AC19V17 adapters shipped with the VGC-JS240, VGC-JS250, VGC-JS270 and VGC-JS290 series Vaio desktop PCs and the VGP-PRBX1 and VGP-PRFE1 Vaio docking stations. There have been four reported incidents involving the products, but none so far in the US.

Consumers are advised to stop using the products immediately, says Sony. The company adds that the affected AC adapters may pose a potential hazard ‘as insulation inside the AC adapter can fail over time, posing an electrical shock hazard to consumers’.

Customers in the US can contact Sony toll-free at (877) 361-4481, or check out the product recall site here.
