Seagate’s Satellite streams content to your iPad

Seagate has introduced a wireless portable hard drive designed to easily stream content to Apple’s iPad.

According to a Seagate rep, the GoFlex Satellite HDD is targeted at tablet owners who prefer to access local content rather than stream cloud-based videos.

“Yes, streaming over the Internet has enabled video access for tablets, but the quality is at the mercy of the Internet connection, be it over Wi-Fi or 3G/4G – and it’s often difficult to watch video without choppiness or pixilation,” the rep told TG Daily in an e-mailed statement.

“So rather than rely on a buffered stream from a distant provider, the Satellite HDD wirelessly serves up media content as a local attached storage for up to three devices at the same time.”

The USB 3.0 Satellite HDD boasts a (rechargeable) stand-by battery life of up to 25 hours and offers approximately 5 hours of continuously streaming video.

Battery life can be further extended via Seagate’s GoFlex Media app which temporarily loads the video onto an iOS device and allows the drive to kick into stand-by mode.

The 500GB GoFlex Satellite is currently available for pre-order from various online retailers at a $200 price point.
