Seagate touts 3TB external drive

Running out of storage space for your MP3s, movies and saved game files? Well, you might want to check out Seagate’s new external desktop drive, which boasts a whopping 3TB capacity.

According to Seagate spokesperson Dave Mosley, the 3TB FreeAgent GoFlex drive will allow digital addicts to store up to 120 HD movies, 1,500 video games, thousands of photos and “countless” hours of digital music.

“A recent report by Parks Associates indicates that…digital media storage needs [will] grow to nearly 900GB by year-end 2014, driven in large part by video downloads, managed copies of Blu-ray Disc, and increasing use of DVR recording capabilities,” said Mosley.

“[That is why] our GoFlex Desk external drive [offers] high-capacity storage and automatic, continuous backup with software file encryption. [In addition], the HDD’s standard USB 2.0 interface can be upgraded to USB 3.0 or FireWire 800 to increase file transfer performance by up to 10x.”

The $250 drive – which is compatible with both Windows 7 and OS X – includes an NTFS driver for the Mac, which allows the drive to store and access files from both Windows and OS X computers without reformatting.

“The NTFS driver is simply installed once on a Mac computer, allowing it to read and write files on a Windows formatted drive,” added Mosley.
