A leaked slide seems to indicate that AMD is prepping two tablet-optimized APUs which could launch in 2012 and 2013.
According to the Turkish Donanim Haber, the chips have been dubbed Samara and Hondo.
As Peter Cartwright of Netbook News notes, the current AMD Desna Z-01 chip, along with similar class processors, are currently bundled under the Brazos brand. However, the new Hondo SoC is likely to fall under a new “Brazos-T” label.
“[In essence], not a totally different name since the chip is still basically a tweaked Ontario C-50 chip with the same 1GHz dual-core Bobcats and 276MHz clocked Radeon HD 6250 graphics,” explained Cartwright.
“[Still], while Desna basically just trims down the TDP, Hondo adds a couple of much needed features – active standby (always on), support for fanless designs and wireless playback of 720p video.”
As expected, Hondo – slated for 2012 – will boast a TDP of under 4.5W, compared to Desna’s 5.9W, because the newer SoC effectively lowers I/O support, while dropping PCIe and VGA. In addition, UMI interfaces have been halved, SATA speed lowered and only a single USB port supported.
Sample silicon is expected to arrive in December of 2011, with mass production kicking off in Q2 of 2012 – just in time for Microsoft’s long-awaited Windows 8.
