Apple engineers may be close to field testing what appears to be a next-gen iPad or CDMA-enabled Verizon iPhone.
According to the Boy Genius Report (BGR), anonymous sources at Club Cupertino have managed to identify an “intriguing block of code” buried way down in iOS4.
“Our source says that the code queries the device and if the device is either a CDMA iPhone or iPad 2, the device will auto-activate, thus bypassing the need for iTunes,” explained BGR.
“We’re told this block of code has appeared every year consecutively before a major iPhone/device release, removed right before launch.
“This allows the products to be field tested by carriers (or partners) without having to activate the handsets or devices.”
BGR added that a “separate source” had informed the site of the platform codes for both the CDMA iPhone and next-gen iPod touch, which are (allegedly) N92AP and N81AP, respectively.
