For years, we’ve relegated computer use to something that has to be done indoors. The sun makes it impossible to do anything on a laptop or netbook outside, due to unmanageable glare on the screen. That is becoming a thing of the past.
Enter the Sunbook from a company called Clover. It uses a 10.1-inch Pixel Qi display. This display is vastly different from traditional LCD technology because it is energy efficient and incorporates special glare-resistant tech so that an overhead light has virtually no effect on it.
Of course, since it’s still a new kind of gadget, there is a price premium. Even though under the hood it’s not that much different from a $300 or $400 netbook, because of the Pixel Qi display it costs $795.
With an Intel Atom N450 1.66 GHz processor, Windows 7 Starter operating system, and 1 GB of DDR2 memory, it’s a capable computer, but only along the lines of what you’d see in other netbooks. Nevertheless, it’s a great option for those who want to get some sun while doing work.
The use of “sun-friendly” display technology became mainstream when Amazon used a similar screen for its Kindle e-reader.
Of course, hopefully this won’t lead to a day at the beach turning into another chance to turn a once relaxing vista into a virtual office.
