Melinda Gates is the co-leader of the highest-capital non-profit organization in the world, but she’s doing an even better service for her household in not allowing any bloated Apple products.
In an interview with the New York Times, Mrs. Gates was berated over her husband’s company’s biggest competitor. Asked if she owned an iPod, Gates said, “No, I have a Zune.” When asked what she would do if her children asked from an iPod, she admitted she has been faced with that. But her response? “You may have a Zune.”
She was then asked if she had an iPad, responding, “Of course not,” until she finally just said straight out, no Apple product “crosses the threshold of our doorstep.” You go, girl!
Mrs. Gates usually stays out of the spotlight, and never really had much say in the way her husband handled Microsoft. However, she is a huge part of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Bill has recently turned in his CEO key at Microsoft to focus more exclusively on his philanthropic efforts. As such, Melinda has a more involved role with her husband’s everyday life.
But she still doesn’t have much to say about Microsoft or its competitors. Asked if there’s enough room in this world for both Microsoft and Apple, Melinda said, “Microsoft certainly makes products for the Macintosh. Go talk to Bill.”
