Tablets seem to be all the rage these days, but if you fancy a more traditional lightweight computer product, Google has you covered with its netbook-only operating system Chrome OS.
Netbook News has a report pointing to a Pocket-lint story in which Google said the first Chrome OS-powered netbooks will be available in the UK in the second quarter of 2011. That will officially begin in two days.
Several other countries will also be on the bandwagon, though the UK was the only one called out specifically. We’d like to think the US is included in the plans.
It’s been estimated that the netbooks will cost between $250 and $600, which would put them right in line with the most popular netbooks on the market right now.
In terms of who will actually build the netbooks, Google has reportedly been firming up plans with Samsung and Acer, among others.
Another interesting point in the report is that the latest build of Google’s new operating system has a touchscreen keyboard. That’s not something you would necessarily require in a netbook, since it already has a full, physical keyboard.
Could this mean Chrome OS will be making its way to the tablet market? Would that even make sense given how much Google wants Android to rule the tablet world?
Nevertheless, if you’re a Google fan and want your computer to be powered by your favorite online behemoth, then start looking around in the next few months.
