Apple has just revealed a new version of its iMac desktop computer line designed specifically for those purchasing computers for a school.
The new device only costs $999, making it the only sub-$1000 iMac marker and nearly 20% cheaper than the cheapest Apple desktop offered through traditional retail channels. Only those customers purchasing for a licensed educational institution are eligible for the specially priced model.
It comes with a 21.5-inch display, a dual-core 3.1 GHz Intel i3 processor, a 250 GB hard drive, AMD Radeon HD graphics, and 2 GB of RAM upgradeable to 8 GB.
The education-focused computer also comes pre-loaded with Facetime HD and had support for Mini DisplayPort.
The reason Apple is able to offer the computer at such an affordable rate is because most schools purchase computers in bulk, whether it’s to replace an outdated computer lab, set up a new lab, or it’s a brand new school in need of a complete arsenal of equipment.
However, Apple did not say customers need to purchase the new iMac in bulk. Those only needing to replace one or two broken computers can still take advantage of the savings.
And while the technical specs may not be the most impressive on the market today, they should be more than capable to handle all the processes needed by the average student.
There is, however, another iMac targeted at school customers with a blazing fast quad-core Core i5 processor with 4 GB of RAM and a 500 GB hard drive, which Apple sells for $1,149.
