Tesla certainly makes some of the coolest electric vehicles out there on the roads today.
As you may recall, Tesla’s first EV was dubbed the Roadster. A small, two-seat vehicle, the Roadster boasted a long driving range for an EV, while offering performance that was on par or better than many gasoline-powered sports cars. The Roadster’s big downside? Price, which was in the six-figure range.
But these days, Tesla is focusing on rolling out its Model S – a very attractive four-door electric vehicle that sells for less than the sporty Roadster.
It boasts a 300-mile maximum driving range per charge – and can still sprint from 0 to 60 mph in just 5.6 seconds.
This week, Tesla unveiled a third electric vehicle known as the Model X. This electric vehicle is a SUV, and it uses an all-wheel-drive version of the drive train from the Model S. Personally, what I find the most interesting about the Model X, is that it actually offers better performance than Model S. To be sure, the SUV will be capable of hitting 60 mph in 4.4 seconds.
Now, onto the vehicle itself. The SUV has three row seating so, you might be wondering where you put cargo. Apparently, under the hood where you normally find the combustion engine is a spot for storing your gear as well as some room behind that third row.
The SUV is designed to hold seven adults and will be priced in the $50,000-$70,000 range with delivery kicking off sometime in late 2013 with an initial version dubbed the “Signature Series,” and normal production versions hitting the roads in 2014.
Certainly, one the most eye grabbing features of this SUV are the rear doors that open gull wing style. It might look like those doors wouldn’t clear cars parked next to the SUV in a parking lot, but Tesla maintains the doors need less space to open than a normal door while swinging high enough for an adult to stand under them.
