Globalfoundries has officially broken ground on the construction of Fab 2, a new semiconductor manufacturing facility located at the Luther Forest Technology Campus in Saratoga County, New York.
The $4.2 billion facility is expected to take approximately three years to complete, with volume production due in 2012.
“Globalfoundries fabs will be optimized for lean operations and maximum efficiency through the use of our patented Automated Precision Manufacturing (APM) technology,” Globalfoundries spokesperson Jon Carvill told TG Daily. “APM functions as a central nerve center for the fab monitoring the health of our tools and production processes to ensure a customers product is being manufactured with a maximum level of speed, accuracy and agility.”
Carvill explained that the company would “ramp Fab 2 on 28nm technology” in 2H12 and then make a “fairly rapid transition” to 22nm sometime shortly thereafter.
“We see the current economy as an opportunity to invest in the long-term growth of our business,” added Carvill. “In many respects it is a buyer’s market right now and we’re fortunate to have the capital resources to make these investments. We wouldn’t be building this new Fab if we didn’t believe in the long-term health of this market.”
However, Carvill declined to comment on rumors that Globalfoundries recently inked a lucrative deal with Nvidia.
“We will have more to announce on the customer front over the next few weeks,” said Carvill. “Unfortunately, we can’t disclose any names at this time.”
