Apple offers $50 shades for 15-inch MacBook Pro

San Francisco (CA) – Apple has graciously decided to allow owners of the 15-inch MacBook Pro to add an anti-glare display for $50. The upgrade option is already available for 17-inch models, although 13-inch Pro units remain glossy-only.

AppleInsider described the move as a “quiet” realization by Club Cupertino that glossy screens “may not be for everyone.” According to AppleInsider, the adoption of glossy displays was apparently influenced by the wild success of the original iPhone, which boasts a shiny glass touchscreen and cool black border.

Apple then introduced a new line of unibody notebooks with glossy screens in October 2008.

The new displays were promised to “provide crisp images and vivid colors which are ideal for viewing photos and movies…and the edge-to-edge cover glass creates a smooth, seamless surface.”

However, Apple’s move towards glossy screens have been harshly criticized by video and image editing aficionados, who claim that the displays complicated color matching.
