Apple eliminates iPad delivery delays

Apple appears to have fixed its supply problems for the iPad, after struggling to fulfil orders since the device’s launch in April.

People ordering all six versions of the iPad online are now being given an estimated shipping time of just 24 hours.

When the tablet was first launched, in April, the company ran out of stock almost immediately. In the first 28 days of the iPad’s availability, Apple recorded sales of a million units. After three months, it’s now sold more than 3.27 million.

Research form iSuppli recently estimated that the device would sell nearly 13 million units this year, and a stonking 100 million by 2013.

At one point, orders were taking over two weeks to fulfil, although the lead time dropped recently to three to five days. Supply of the3G version was particularly tight. The company even had to delay the device’s international launch by a month.

While the mass feeding frenzy for the device is now over, it seems unlikely that the improvement in waiting times is due to a drop in demand.

The probable explanation is that the company’s pressure on component suppliers has paid off. Like many vendors, the company has been facing problems in getting an adequate supply of various components, most notably LCD screens.

It’s not the end of Apple’s supply woes, however. Customers ordering the iPhone 4, which launched in June, still face a three-week delay. The white iPhone is still not available.
