Google’s Android OS has continued its meteoric rise by displacing RIM’s BlackBerry and claiming first place amongst operating systems in handsets sold to US consumers.
The versatile operating system accounted for 33 percent of all smartphones purchased in Q2, well ahead of RIM’s 28% and Apple’s 22%.
“For the second consecutive quarter, Android handsets have shown strong but slowing sell-through market share gains among US consumers,” confirmed NPD spokesperson Ross Rubin.
“While the Google-developed OS took market share from RIM, Apple’s iOS saw a small gain this quarter on the strength of the iPhone 4 launch.”
According to Rubin, the top 5 Android smartphones sold in Q2 included:
- Motorola Droid
- HTC Droid Incredible
- HTC EVO 4G
- HTC Hero
- HTC Droid Eris
However, Rubin also cautioned that BlackBerry 6 offered a number of popular features found in recently launched Android devices, such as support for capacitive touchscreens and a WebKit-based browser.
“[Nevertheless], the Blackberry Torch lacks the large screen allure that has characterized the best selling Android devices at its price point, including the Droid Incredible and EVO 4G.”
