At the fifth annual T3 Awards show, it was Samsung’s Galaxy S II, not Apple’s iPhone 4, that was voted as the top smartphone of the year.
Managed by the UK-based website T3, the awards show acknowledges the best gadgets across a wide variety of categories, and has come to be recognized as one of the most prestigious awards to be received in the consumer electronics industry.
Because the iPhone 4 set one-day sales records and was the last Apple phone to launch with Steve Jobs still at the helm of the company, it was the expected favorite to win the coveted “phone of the year” award.
But in quite a victory for Samsung, the Galaxy S II, which has superior specifications and is the company’s pride and joy, it managed to topple the voting.
The iPhone 4, of course, had a few detracting issues, including the antenna-gate scandal that caused Apple to say that if you lose calls, that’s your problem.
That may have had something to do with the iPhone 4’s loss.
Nevertheless, it highlights the ongoing battle between Samsung and Apple, with both vying to be recognized as the maker of the best and coolest consumer electronics.
Other winners at the awards show included Kindle being recognized as the commuter gadget of the year, and the Xbox 360 Kinect accessory getting the award for best gadget of the year.
