Cops to get long range tasers

Not satisfied with having to get close to the people they want to Taser, coppers are looking at new long-range shocking gear.

According to New Scientist, a Pentagon project, now in its final stages, to perfect a projectile capable of delivering an electric shock to incapacitate a person 60 metres away.

The projectile, which will be fired from a standard 40-millimetre grenade launcher, is being developed by Taser.  It has the euphemistic title of Human Electro-Muscular Incapacitation (HEMI) device.

Apparently they are a bit worried there is a risk that at close range the projectile itself will seriously injure the person even before the voltage hits.

Since the arresting donut-muncher will have to wobble 60 metres before cuffing the target, it is likely that the person will have to have a longer shock that normal.

There have been a number of cases where people have died due to being tasered and a hit with a longer range version will expose them to danger more.

Tasering at that range also assumes that it will be only one police officer shooting a victim when under most circumstances the risk of a suspect escaping a missed shot will be eased by several opening fire.
