Clearwire wants LTE and WiMax to "converge"

Clearwire CEO Bill Morrow has laid out his vision of how incompatible network technologies such as WiMax and Long Term Evolution (LTE) could eventually converge to form a common standard.

Morrow – who made the remarks during his keynote at CTIA 2010 – confirmed he had discussed the idea with a number of telecom and technology companies, including China Mobile, Vodafone Group and Intel.

Morrow also called for the industry to focus on the similarities, rather than differences, between WiMax and LTE.

“With this overlap, shouldn’t we all be thinking how can we bring it together? We’re [Clearwire] not going to fight a war,” said Morrow.

“We’re going to provide our customers just what they want. Our spectrum is designed and built so we can add on LTE should we need to.”
