Do you know what two days ago was? No, it wasn’t a holiday or a well-known Christmas shopping day, but somehow it became the new record holder for the most money spent on Ebay’s mobile app in a single day.
On December 13, US shoppers spent a total of $5 million in purchases through Ebay’s mobile app and mobile website. That’s 38% more than the weekend after Thanksgiving, and significantly higher than the same period last year.
At the peak of the busy day were the hours of 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM, Eastern time. During that period, around 9500 transactions were being triggered every hour, or about 2.6 transactions every second.
Interestingly, the second Sunday in December was the busiest Ebay shopping day last year as well, though it holds no such record for any other major online or brick-and-mortar retailer. Ebay now refers to it as “Mobile Sunday,” to be added into the mix of Black Friday and Cyber Monday.
Ebay is a popular spot for holiday shoppers on a budget, looking to buy gently-used merchandise at a fraction of what it would cost at retail. It’s also a beacon of hope for those with a lot of money looking to buy the latest sold-out gadget.
The highest concentration of people using Ebay over the weekend were in California, Florida, Indiana, Pennsylvania, and Ohio.
