Apple App Store downloads top 1.5 billion in first year

Cupertino (CA) – Apple says customers have downloaded more than 1.5 billion applications in the first year of operations for its App Store.

The company says the online store now features more than 65,000 apps, sells to customers in 77 countries and that more than 100,000 developers have signed up to the iPhone Developer Program.

“The App Store is like nothing the industry has ever seen before in both scale and quality,” said Apple CEO Steve Jobs. “With 1.5 billion apps downloaded, it is going to be very hard for others to catch up.”

It would appear that Apple itself is having difficulty keeping up if its extremely, err, Californian attitude to managing the app store is anything to go by. Porn apps appear, get removed and then reinstated, leaving the cynical to wonder if anyone is actually in charge of the operation.

And let it not be forgotten that roughly 64,999 of the apps on offer have as much relevance to the real world as a 1960s Lucy Show script.
