LG has unveiled an all-in-one PC running Google’s web-centric Chrome operating system (OS). Dubbed Chromebase, the system will be showcased at CES 2014 this January in Las Vegas.
The Chrome AIO features a 21.5 inch, 1920 x 1080 pixel IPS display with wide viewing angles, an Intel Celeron processor (Haswell), 2GB of RAM and a 16GB solid state drive.
Additional specs include HDMI input, three USB 2.0 ports, one USB 3.0 port, an Ethernet jack, a 1.3MP webcam, 5W stereo speakers, keyboard, mouse and cable organizer.
As Liliputing’s Brad Linder notes, LG’s Chromebase obviously isn’t the first desktop PC to ship with Chrome OS, with Samsung releasing a number of Chromebox models over the last few years. However, the Chromebase is the first all-in-one model.
“If the Samsung Chromebox is about the size and shape of a Mac Mini, the LG Chromebase is more like an iMac — you know, if an iMac had a Celeron processor, a tiny amount of built-in storage, and an operating system based on a web browser,” Linder explained.
“If you’re not sold on the idea of using Chrome OS as a primary operating system, the HDMI input means you could use the Chromebase as a display for a traditional PC… with the option of booting straight to a web browser when you’re too busy to load Windows (or another OS). But the Chromebase will probably be a bit more expensive than your typical display.”
