Ouya has introduced a new version of its Android-powered game console with a new white case, controller and double the amount of storage space. As expected, the original black Ouya console with 8GB is still available for $100.
Unfortunately, the latest iteration of the device (priced at $129), is still powered by Nvidia’s Tegra 3 (Cortex-A9 quad-core processor), rather than the faster Tegra 4 SoC.
As Liliputing’s Brad Linder notes, the rest of the console specs remain unchanged, with 1GB of RAM, one USB 2.0 port, one micro USB port, WiFi, Ethernet, Bluetooth and HDMI output (+cable).
“The Tegra 3 processor is starting to look a little dated now that Nvidia has a faster ARM Cortex-A15 alternative, and the latest chips from Samsung and Qualcomm also outperform Nvidia’s older chip,” writes Linder.
“But there are still plenty of games designed to run well on a Tegra 3 chip, and at $130 or less the Ouya is significantly cheaper than a PlayStation 4 or Xbox One… which isn’t surprising, since it’s also significantly less powerful.”
Then again, the Ouya, designed by Yves Behar, was never really intended to go head-to-head with top-tier gaming systems manufactured by industry heavyweights like Microsoft and Sony.
“[Rather], It’s designed to make living room gaming more accessible, both for gamers and game developers,” adds Linder.
