Rockchip’s RK3188 quad-core processor is probably one of the most powerful pieces of ARM Cortex-A9 silicon on the market today.
So it comes as little surprise that the chip has been overclocked from 1.6 GHz to 1.92 GHz by the folks at ArcTablet who created custom firmware for the occasion.
As Liliputing’s Brad Linder notes, the results are “pretty noticeable,” with an approximately 25 percent higher score in Antutu (benchmark) and a nearly 40 percent boost in Linpack.
“Of course, overclocking can cause increased heat generation, shorter battery life, and stability problems in some situations,” Linder explained.
“While you don’t have to worry about battery life if you’re using an Android mini PC, there’s still a chance the chip could overheat — ArcTablet pointed a fan at their UG007 Android TV stick to help keep it cool during the tests.”
Obviously, there isn’t really a pressing need to overclock the RK3188 chip, although it could come in handy for accelerating web page load times and system responsiveness.
