Barring any last minute changes, it seems as if Google’s upcoming Glass tech will be hacker and modder friendly, just like Mountain View’s Nexus indigenously designed phone and tablets.
Indeed, early versions of Google Glass (Explorer Edition) feature an unlockable bootloader. Meaning, modders can enable ADB debugging, reboot into the bootloader and run the same “fastboot oem unlock” command that unlocks a Nexus device.
As Liliputing’s Brad Linder notes, developer Jay Lee has already used ADB access to analyze the hardware and software behind Glass.
The results? Well, the device is powered by Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS) and boasts a TI OMAP 4430 ARM Cortex-A9 processor along with 682MB of available RAM and 12.5GB of available storage space.
“At this point developers are just starting to write apps for Google Glass and early adopters are getting used to wearing a tiny computer/navigation system/camera above their right eye,” Linder added.
“But eventually we could start to see custom ROMs and other advanced hacks for Google’s wearable device.”
Indeed, Jay Freeman, the world famous dev and father of Cydia for iOS devices has just managed to root/jailbreak his Google Glass spectacles.
