Bluestacks users have been able to run Android apps on their Mac OS X and Windows operating systems for quite some time now.
And today the company kicked off the next stage of Bluestacks, releasing a touch-friendly version of popular App Player software optimized specifically for Microsoft’s Windows 8 Surface Pro tablet.
As with previous iterations, the software is completely free to download and is capable of running any Android app .
“We’ve had our users asking for a Win8 version for a long time. Now that it’s finally available on our website we’re looking forward to getting feedback and building on the experience,” said BlueStacks CEO Rosen Sharma.
“The number of mobile apps being written overall is expanding exponentially and Microsoft has not added apps to the handful it has. Our goal is to get people more value out of their Surface Pro and Win8 devices.”
Of course, Android apps aren’t the only non-Windows software that can run on Redmond’s Surface Pro. As we discussed yesterday, there are now detailed instructions available on on how to get Ubuntu Linux up and running on the Intel x86-powered tablet.
The $900 Surface Pro is available in 64GB and 128GB configurations. Both models are packaged with a Surface pen built around Block technology, which allows users to edit, collaborate and “get things done.”
Additional accessories, such as the Touch Cover and Type Cover, carry a price tag of $120 and $130, respectively. Microsoft also recently announced a slew of new accessories for its tablet lineup, including three touch covers (red, magenta and cyan) for $130, along with a Wedge Touch Mouse for $70.
