RIM is betting the farm on its upcoming BlackBerry 10 OS, which the smartphone maker recently showcased at its Jam conference in California.
Many in the industry have been wondering when the long-awaited operating system would officially launch after a series of postponements and delays.
Well, RIM has now officially confirmed the BlackBerry 10 launch event will be held on January 30, 2012, just a few weeks after CES 2013 where we’re sure to hear lots about BlackBerry 10.
“In building BlackBerry 10, we set out to create a truly unique mobile computing experience that constantly adapts to your needs,” said RIM CEO Thorsten Heins said. “Our team has been working tirelessly to bring our customers innovative features combined with a best in class browser, a rich application ecosystem, and cutting-edge multimedia capabilities. All of this will be integrated into a user experience – the BlackBerry Flow – that is unlike any smartphone on the market today.”
As many industry watchers note, BlackBerry 10 OS may have arrived too late for RIM, which has seen its market share sink considerably over the past few years as the corporation struggles to compete against Apple’s iOS and Google’s Android with outdated hardware and software.
Indeed, it seems increasingly likely that Microsoft will end up claiming third place in the handset market with its Windows Phone OS, as RIM slowly fades away, with its security-focused OS limited primarily to key corporate and enterprise markets.
