Scratches are normal, Apple tells buyers

Let’s hope that all the purchasers of the iPhone 5 like the distressed look: while users have been complaining of scuffs and chips, they’ve been told that it’s all percently normal.

Users have been complaining on the company’s support forum that their new phones are scratching easily.

Indeed, some say theirs were damaged before they were even shipped, with the protective film slapped over the top.

“As soon as I opened the box, I noticed that there were 2 minor nicks on the silver bezel and a small scuff on the Apple logo,” says one user. “I was able to get a replacement on the spot. Then, as soon as I opened the replacement stock, I found big scuffs at the back cover.”

The black model is the most complained-about, with the aluminum underneath particularly noticeable, although the white version appears just as vulnerable.

IFixit – or, rather, the two-year-old daughter of one of its researchers – has carried out tests on the phone, and concluded that it is indeed very easy to scratch.

But when one owner contacted the company to ask what could be done, he recenved a rather dismissive response from senior vice president of marketing Phil Schiller, as reports.

“Any aluminum product may scratch or chip with use, exposing its natural silver color. This is normal,” Schiller wrote.

There’s a long tradition of Apple customers complaining about their new toys – and of Apple ignoring those complaints for as long as possible. This latest fuss will at least be good news for manufacturers of protective cases.
