Apple caused quite a stir by removing Google’s Map app from its latest iteration of iOS.
Indeed, The New York Timesrecently complained that Apple’s map location database is “sparser than Google’s,” lacks integrated public-transportation options and does not allow users to “rotate the map with [their] fingers or zoom in by more than a couple of degrees.”
Yes, iOS 6 owners can still access Google Maps in their Safari browsers, but Cupertino’s rather draconian decision to yank the app has received a rather critical reception even from diehard Apple fanbois.
Unsurprisingly, a work-around has already tipped up – courtesy of one Ryan Petrich who managed to successfully port the Google Maps app to iOS 6.
Unfortunately, the workaround is currently unstable and does require a jailbroken iPhone, so there is no clear timeframe on when the modded app will go live for the seething Apple masses.
”Still crashy and cannot be distributed to the public yet, but it mostly works,” Petrich confirmed in a succint tweet.
In other Apple mobile news, Apple’s iPhone was jailbroken over the weekend by iOS developer and hacker Grant Paul who posted a screen shot of the wildly popular smartphone running Cydia Store.
It should also be noted that a tethered iOS 6 jailbreak is currently available for the A4-based iPhone 4, the iPhone 3GS and the 4th-generation iPod touch. However, the iPhone 4S, the iPad 2, the iPad 3, and the 5th-generation iPod touch are not supported by the recent iOS 6 jailbreak.
