Google has updated its newest version of Android, bringing Ice Cream Sandwich to version 4.0.4.
The latest iteration of the search giant’s mobile operating system adds some tweaks, optimizes a few user interface changes, and patches some bugs. It has been rolled out to the Galaxy Nexus phone, which of course already had full support for Ice Cream Sandwich.
But it also is rolling out to the Nexus S 4G, which has seen a roller coaster ride when it comes to the ICS platform.
First off, when the Nexus S ICS update was first being pushed through last December, Google had to quickly yank it after numerous reports of users whose phones starting freezing and crashing.
But then it fixed the bugs and starting rolling out updates yet again, but only to those with 3G versions of the Nexus S. Those with the Nexus S 4G were left behind.
That is, until now. The Nexus S 4G update is now being leaked through various sources, and it appears to be a stable patch.
Less than 2% of all active Android devices are running version 4.0 or later, while manufacturers are forced to be conservative about when they expect to get their devices updated.
Several other manufacturers have pledged support for the new update, and a bunch of phones currently running an older version of Android will be eligible to upgrade to Ice Cream Sandwich beginning in the coming months.
