Archos unveils Ice Cream Sandwich kids tablet

Archos is trying to break into the market that few have entered – a kid-centric tablet.

The company is trying to differentiate itself from the myriad other tablets out there by appealing specifically to children. And it actually has some pretty powerful under-the-hood specs. The device has a 1 GHz processor and 1 GB of RAM.

The tablet, called the Child Pad, has a 7-inch display and runs the latest version of Android, version 4.0, also known as Ice Cream Sandwich. All of this will be available for just $129.

The tablet will launch with 28 apps pre-installed, including the classic casual gaming hit Angry Birds. As for other apps, a specialized children-themed app store will be available.

It’s an interesting move to make the device geared exclusively to children. After all, after making a 1 GHz, Ice Cream Sandwich-powered tablet for just $129, it could have marketed it to a much wider budget-conscious audience.

Although, the market for kids tablets hasn’t really been tapped into. There have been a few other companies that tried to make inroads in this niche, but they’ve been very cheap and could not stand up next to another tablet.

Because it’s designed for kids, the Child Pad complies with the US’s COPPA regulations, which prevent children from accidentally exposing their personal information through the Internet.

The Child Pad is slated to be released at the end of the month.
