The World is disappearing, says NASA

The World is gradually melting away, according to the latest pictures from NASA’s Earth Observatory.

It’s talking about the man-made archipelago in Dubai. The development was built between 2003 and 2008, and took 320 million cubic meters of sand and 37 million tonnes of rock.

But with development halted on the 300 islands, they are now looking just a little tatty around the edges. Some have drifted apart, whereas others, such as Australia and south-east Asia, have merged.

While work has continued on the nearby Palm Jumeirah complex, NASA observes that “Little to no infrastructure development of The World is apparent in this astronaut photograph.”

The image was taken on January 13 by a member of the International Space Station Expedition 22 crew using a Nikon camera.
