This week’s prize for pseudo-scientific snake-oil goes to Los Angeles-based My DNA Fragrance – which is selling perfume it claims is made using DNA samples from Michael Jackson.
The company stops short of suggesting you’ll actually smell like him – apparently the perfume’s simply supposed to mark his “history making moments”.
It got Jackson’s DNA from John Reznikoff, who, rather wonderfully, it describes as the world’s pre-eminent historical hair collector. One presumes there isn’t much of the stuff in each bottle.
And it’s not entirely clear what exactly the company does with it. “Using the Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) process DNA can be extracted from hair shafts with or without the follicle intact,” says the company’s website. It adds: “M is engineered from the DNA genetic code of the King of Pop, Michael Jackson.”
A three-ounce bottle of the stuff will set you back $60, but, boy does it sound worth every penny. “M is an exclusive one-of-a-kind fragrance that explodes into an indescribable fragrance, which seemly [sic] draws the attention of every person in the room,” promises My DNA Fragrance. “It is composed of the lightest, but most volatile essences.”
There’s a range of other celebrity DNA perfumes too, including Elvis Presley and Einstein.
