Semiconductor company Intel said it will invest many millions of Euro into the Exascale Computing Research Center, in collaboration with the French Commissariat à l’Énergie Atomique, the Grand Equipement National de Calculif, and the Université de Versailles Saint-Quentin-en-Tveline.
The purpose of the lab is to research building high performance computing systems with 1,000 times the performance of today’s fastest supercomputers.
Exascale means computers that can process a trillion instructions per second.
The three year Intel investment will be matched by similar investments by the other organizations. The agenda of the Center will be to integrate multi petaFLOP systems, creating advanced performance optimization techniques, and working with end users in areas including energy, seismology, fluid dynamics and health care.
The move is part of the Intel Labs Europe push – there are already 19 labs in existence employing over 900 professionals.
